R2R 2009 Fundraising effort – Where Your Dollars are Going
Funds are needed for two programs: one is The Remember Project - a Holocaust education project based in Charleston and under the auspices of the Charleston Jewish Federation. The other is the Holocaust Lending and Research Library in Savannah - it will be housed in the JEA/JCC in Savannah. The JCC is under the umbrella of the Savannah Jewish Federation.
Both programs need our support. Contributions can be made conveniently through the secure PayPal link shown here and will be equally divided between the two.
THE REMEMBER PROJECT Charleston, SC
(A Holocaust & Diversity Education Project of the Charleston Jewish Federation)
The Holocaust was the most systematic and extensive government engineered genocide in history. The Nazis murdered approximately 6 million Jews, including more than one million children. This horrific catastrophe compels us to study the Holocaust so that we can prevent future tragedies. As Elie Weisel stated: “For the dead and the living we must bear witness.”
Students must learn the history of the Holocaust so that we are not doomed to repeat it. The REMEMBER program offers students the opportunity to not only learn Holocaust history, but apply the lessons to society today.
THE REMEMBER PROJECT PROGRAM GOALS
· To educate about the horrors of the Holocaust
· To promote the concept of mutual respect for all peoples
· To create goodwill and community building amongst all ethnicities in Charleston
· To inspire people to take a stand for what is right
THE HOLOCAUST RESEARCH & LENDING LIBRARY Savannah, GA
Lisa Kaminsky, a member of the Savannah Jewish community came up with the idea through her involvement with Holocaust remembrance, to house a lending library at the Jewish Educational Alliance (JCC). The plan is to house the library using a portion of their 80,000 sq. ft. building located on a prominent corner in Savannah. The JCC is considered the heart of the Savannah Jewish community. They have raised $7,000 out of the goal of $30,000.. The library will supply much needed and hard to come by, often expensive multi-media material to local teachers and educators.
The lending library is conceived as being a resource for Greater Savannah and Southern Carolina?s “Coastal Empire & Low Country". The library will be stocked with a variety of age appropriate tools educators can use for teaching the lessons of the Holocaust: that diversity, acceptance, and tolerance are paramount and acts of hatred are unacceptable. The library hopes to obtain a significant film resource as well. Such items are typically not included in classroom budgets.
Lisa Kaminsky's grandfather Chaim Melamed, is a survivor of four concentration camps-- Auschwitz, Stecken, Ahlem and Bergen- Belsen; he has been a frequent speaker at schools and civic groups for many years. Many of those speaking engagements are at the JEA. Lisa's father is an ardent rider and although not in good health, still rides almost daily.
